About Us


Dr Hitesh Patel is Consultant – Pain Management & Palliative Care he recieved his M.D. from B.J. Medical College Ahmedabad, Asia’s largest hospital, Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad. He earned his F.I.P.M. (Fellow In Pain Management) at Daradia Pain Hospital in Kolkata, which is affiliated with the Aesculap Academy in Germany. He received his C.C.P.P.M. (Certificate Course in Pain and Palliative Medicine) from Gujarat Cancer Research Institute Ahmedabad, the state’s largest cancer hospital.

CANCER PAIN

  • 15 million new cases of cancer by 2021 – WHO.
  • 10 lacs new cancer patients every year.
  • 50% undergoing treatment and 90% with advanced cancer have pain.
  • 40% die with severe pain.
  • 60%-80%complains of inadequate pain relief by their physician.

What are the causes of Cancer Pain?

Due to cancer itself: 70%

  • Tumor infiltration.
  • Involvement of nerves/plexus.
  • Bony metastases

 

Due to therapy:30%.

  • Surgery.
  • Radiotherapy.
  • Chemotherapy.

 

Neurolysis

It is a procedure by which nerve fibre carrying nociception (pain sensation) is irreversibly destroyed to obtain permanent pain relief—using neurolytic agents: like phenol, alcohol, hypertonic saline, and glycerin. Other methods:

 

Advantages:

  • Longer duration of pain relief.
  • Inexpensive
  • Repeated visits to a pain clinic or hospital are not required.
  • A prolonged hospital stay is not required.
  • Patients can remain at home pain-free even where medical help is scarce.

Treatment

  • Cancer pain can be treated in 85-90%of cases by systemic pharmacotherapy.
