Dr Hitesh Patel is Consultant – Pain Management & Palliative Care he recieved his M.D. from B.J. Medical College Ahmedabad, Asia’s largest hospital, Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad. He earned his F.I.P.M. (Fellow In Pain Management) at Daradia Pain Hospital in Kolkata, which is affiliated with the Aesculap Academy in Germany. He received his C.C.P.P.M. (Certificate Course in Pain and Palliative Medicine) from Gujarat Cancer Research Institute Ahmedabad, the state’s largest cancer hospital.

Meralgia Paresthetica Overview

Meralgia Paresthetica is a medical condition resulting from compression (pressure on or squeezing) of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). This large nerve supplies sensation to the front and side of your thigh. Meralgia paresthetica results in sensations of aching, burning, numbness, or stabbing in the thigh area.

CAUSES

  • Tight clothing
  • obesity or weight gain
  • pregnancy
  • local trauma 
  • diabetes, hypothyroidism

SYMPTOMS

symptoms affecting the outer (lateral) part of the thigh:

  • Tingling and numbness
  • Burning, stabbing pain
  • Decreased sensation
  • Increased sensitivity and pain to even a light touch
  • Symptoms on only one side of the body.
  • Worse pain after walking or standing for long periods of time.

Diagnosis

  • Clinical examination
  • Blood report to rule out the systemic disease
  • X-ray, CT Scan, and MRI to rule out another possibility
  • EMG-NCV study

TREATMENT

  • Weight loss
  • Wearing loose clothing
  • Medicine- NSAIDs
  • Physiotherapy- TENS, Ultrasound
  • Injection- USG-guided injection
  • Radio Frequency Ablation
