Heel Pain

2 Main Cause

  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Plantar Fasciatis

What is Achilles tendinitis?

Achilles tendinitisΒ (Achilles tenosynovitis, Achilles tendinopathy, calcaneal tendinitis) is disruption of theΒ Achilles tendonΒ by degeneration, trauma, or inflammation. This tendon is the extension of theΒ gastrocnemiusΒ andΒ  soleus Β muscles onto theΒ  calcaneus Β (heel bone): it causes the foot to extend (plantar flexion) when those muscles contract.

Who are at more Risk ?

  • Male more than Female
  • More common in young people
  • A flat arch in your foot can strain the Achilles tendon.
  • Obesity
  • Tight calf muscles also can increase tendon strain.

Symptoms of Achilles tendinitis

  • Pain in the foot, while walking on the floor
  • Pain is usually worse in the morning when you take your first steps out of bed
  • if you’ve been sitting or lying down for a while

Diagnosis For Achilles Tendinitis

  • Proper history
  • Physical examination
  • X-ray
  • MRI

What is Plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of pain on the bottom of the heel. Approximately 2 million patients are treated for this condition every year. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the strong band of tissue (plantar fascia) that supports the arch of your foot becomes irritated and inflamed. Normally, these ligaments act as shock absorbers, supporting the arch of the foot. Too much pressure on your feet can damage or tear the ligaments; the plantar fascia becomes inflamed, and the inflammation causes heel pain and stiffness

Symptoms of Plantar fasciitis

  • PainΒ on the bottom of the heel, while you take your first step in the morning.
  • people feel a burning or ache on the bottom of the foot extending outward from the heel.
  • After sitting or lying down for a while.
  • Pain isn’t usually felt during the activity but rather just after stopping.

Risk Factors of Plantar fasciitis

  • Most common between the ages of 40 and 60.Β Factory workers, teachers and others who spend most of their work hours walking or standing on hard surfaces can damage their plantar fascia.
  • Certain types of exercise.Β Activities that place a lot of stress on your heel and attached tissue β€” such as long-distance running, ballistic jumping activities, and ballet dancing and aerobic danceβ€” can contribute to an earlier onset of plantar fasciitis.
  • Foot mechanics.Β Being flat-footed, having a high arch or even having an abnormal pattern of walking can affect the way weight is distributed when you’re standing and put added stress on the plantar fascia.
  • Obesity put extra stress on your plantar fascia.
  • Occupations that keep you on your feet.Β Factory workers, teachers and others who spend most of their work hours walking or standing on hard surfaces can damage their plantar fascia.
  • Heel Spurs –Although many people with plantar fasciitis have heel spurs, spurs are not the cause of plantar fasciitis pain. One out of 10 people has heel spurs, but only 1 out of 20 people (5%) with heel spurs has foot pain. Because the spur is not the cause of plantar fasciitis, the pain can be treated without removing the spur.
